The NWSSSP was established to support the implementation of the PE, School Sport and Club Links Strategy which went live in April 2003.
SSP’s are one of 9 strands outlined in the PESSCL strategy, which has an overall aim of enhancing the take up of sporting opportunities by 5-16 year olds.
Established in 2003, the NWSSSP is working to achieve the DCSF and DCMS shared Public Service Agreement target:
Current focus on PE & school sport is to:
raise standards & help narrow the achievement gap
improve the health of the nation
ensure lifelong participation & international success.
“to increase the percentage of 5-16 year olds who spend a minimum of 2 hours a week participating in high quality PE and school sport, within and beyond the curriculum, to 85% by 2008”
In July 2007, the Prime Minister announced exciting plans which will further boost sport and PE. Extra funding of £100m for sport and PE will be in place to benefit all young people aged 5-19, between April 2008 and March 2011.
The ambition is that by 2010, not only will all 5-16 year olds benefit from 2 hours high quality PE and school sport each week; but all 5-19 year olds, regardless of their education or employment setting, will be able to access a further 3 hours each week of varied, high quality sporting activities.
