The NWSSSP was established to support the implementation of the PE, School Sport and Club Links Strategy which went live in April 2003.
Since then, the NWSSSP worked hard to achieve the DCSF and DCMS shared Public Service Agreement target:
“ to increase the percentage of 5-16 year olds who spend a minimum of 2 hours a week participating in high quality PE and school sport, within and beyond the curriculum, to 85% by 2008”
In July 2008, 87% of 5-16 year olds in NW Surrey were participating in at least 2 hours high quality PE and school sport each week. We surpassed the Government’s target of 85%.
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement of further funding for PE and sport in July 2007, our challenge is to build on past achievements, and ensure that by 2011 we meet the new ambition outlined in the PE and Sport Strategy for Young People:
Create a new “5 hour offer” for all 5-16 year olds. Continue to increase the number of 5-16 year olds taking part in at least 2 hours high quality PE and sport at school each week; and create new opportunities for them to participate in a further 3 hours of sporting activity each week through school, voluntary and community providers; and
Create new opportunities for all 16-19 year olds to participate in 3 hours of sporting activities each week through their local colleges or in local clubs.
